Lesson 1 - Basic Components of Your Computer

Types of Computer

There are two types of personal computer--desktop computers and laptop. Basically both of these do the same job and only differ in their physical structure. The desktop computer, shown below, is larger and so must be used on a desk or table.

The laptop computer, as shown below, is smaller so can be carried around easily and does not require a desk or table. (It folds into a convenient carrying case.)

There are advantages and disadvantages to both kinds of computer.

Desktop
  • Not easily portable.
  • Less expensive computer.
  • Regular keyboard which is easier to type on.
  • Easier to add other devices and components to.
  • A normal mouse (used to move a cursor around the display screen) is used.
Laptop
  • Very portable. Can be used almost anywhere.
  • More expensive computer.
  • Keyboard is less easy to use.
  • Small so harder to add other devices or components.
  • The pointing device is not a regular mouse and may be not as easy to use.
